As the wig consultant at Selfridges, I deal directly with clients on a daily basis who are about to start chemotherapy. Choosing chemo wigs for the first time can feel overwhelming, so this article answers the three questions I’m asked most often.
Do Synthetic Chemo Wigs Look Fake?
Advances in technology have transformed how synthetic wigs look. The new designs have virtually invisible lace fronts that create a realistic hairline, and most also have a monofilament top that’s transparent and breathable. The density and amount of hair has also been reduced to create a very natural shape. Unlike older designs, they’re cool and comfortable to wear. Synthetic wigs also come in a vast array of colours — from natural greys through to balayage and dark-rooted tones. Is Real Hair the Best Choice for Chemo Wigs?
A real hair wig can be restyled, blow-dried and curled, and generally lasts much longer than a synthetic one. Synthetic wigs are very low maintenance but on average need replacing after six months. Real human hair wigs have a reputation for being hard to look after and style — but this is only true when working with poor quality or over-processed hair. In my chemotherapy wig collection, I’ve chosen pieces with hand-knotted caps and the best quality hair available, so they stay comfortable and easy to manage.
Aren’t Good Quality Chemo Wigs Very Expensive?
When I source new pieces for clients facing hair loss due to chemotherapy, I always take into account a wide variety of price points. Some clients think they’ll have to pay a lot for the right wig — that’s a common misconception. I make sure every client is given as many options within their budget as possible. All chemo wigs are also VAT-free when purchased for medical hair loss (see the government’s guidance on VAT relief for the disabled), so the exemption is applied automatically at the point of sale.
